Perception

Perception is important because it guides human behaviour. So, what is perception? Perception is the process by which human beings interpret an object to produce meaningful understanding which in turn forms the basis of the person’s experiences of the World. It is a process of attaining awareness or understanding of sensory information.
The word ‘perception’ takes its origin from the Latin words perceptio, percepio which means “receiving, collecting, action of taking possession, apprehension with the mind or senses.” Perception is one of the oldest fields in Psychology.

One’s perception is a result of past experiences, one’s cultural background, education, understanding of things and the ability to interpret. The question “Is the glass half empty or half full?” demonstrates that an object can be perceived in different ways. The natural tendency of human beings is to see an object with a preconditioned mindset. This is because human mind can contemplate only those things to which it has been exposed.
