Max Weber was one of the pioneers in the field of Management thought. He tried to find out why employees in Organisations obeyed those in authority over them. According to him, Authority "implies acceptence of the rule by the people over whom it is to be exercised". He identified three types of authorities:
1. Charismatic Authority
2. Traditional Authority
3. Rational Legal Authority
1. Charismatic Authority: Charisma is a spiritual power or a personal quality that gives an individual influence or authority over large number of people. Charismatic leaders are born with personal charm and magnetism with strong abilities of interpersonal communication and persuasion. They gain influence mainly from their strength of personality. Few examples of Charismatic Authority are Napolean, Hitler, Churchil, Gandhi etc
2. Traditional Authority: Authority gained by birth, eg. Kings, Queens etc. When power passes from one generation to another. Historically Traditional Authority has been the most common form among Governments.
3. Rational Legal Authority: This type of authority depends for its legitimacy on the formal rules and established laws of the Country. Obediance and acceptance to this type of Authority arises from the position and office of the person in Authority. Government Officials are the best examples of this type of authority.
